BRITISH LITERATURE: SHAKESPEARE (Option 1) $638*

$68550

with Dr. Whit Jones

Calendar Aug 28, 2019 at 2 pm, runs for 32 weeks

LIVE/GRADED WEDNESDAY 2:00-3:30 PM ET (Prerequisites: none - Recommend Grades: 10th-12th, 9th ok if advanced): This class will we cover six plays—The Merchant of Venice, Henry V, Julius Caesar, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, and The Tempest.  Students get exposed to two comedies, two tragedies, a history play, and a romance from the body of Shakespeare’s drama.  The course will count for a British Literature credit and a writing credit.

A focus of the course will be showing students that Shakespeare’s greatness is found not just in his brilliant and beautiful use of language but in his profound ideas—ideas that are communicated with remarkable coherence through almost every detail of the plays, ideas that represent universal truths concerning human nature and that often draw from the teachings of scripture.  The themes of Shakespeare’s plays, in other words, relate to the longings, hopes, fears, struggles, and successes of the students’ own lives and help them connect these life experiences with the truth of God’s word.
