Summary: Geometry is the study of mathematics that is concerned with shapes, lines, areas, proofs, conic sections, and more. It takes these concepts, that were briefly introduced in algebra 1, and expounds on them, and lets students see how math is applied to the real world. Geometry helps develop certain thinking processes that are incorporated in future math courses, as well as in everyday life. It is a very ‘fun’ math that helps students to think deeply about certain things while allowing them the freedom to explore new concepts. Geometry is usually taken between algebra 1 and 2, although it is possible to take it after algebra 2. It is a 10th-11th grade course, and algebra 1 is a prerequisite for it.

*If registered by March 31, 2020. Payment schedule will vary based on your registration date. Final payment due by Oct. 31, 2020. You may request a custom payment schedule.

*PRECISION & SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

$3749

with Mr. Dan Martin

This is an Apologia Self-Paced course.

Registration in a self-paced course means that a student works online at his or her own pace and comfort level (within a 1-year subscription window). There is no instructor available as a part of this course.

Self-paced courses are living courses. The online platform offers Apologia certain advantages in presenting you with the most accurate, up to date information. Living courses may be updated and improved over time with changes or even new features. No more waiting for the new printing of a book!

One-year access to this course includes:

  • Readings for the course curriculum
  • Multimedia and interactive activities for the student to complete
  • Assessment and exams that are automatically graded
  • Automatic grade report generation
  • Progress tracking viewable by a parent, guardian, or homeschool coordinator

More on Grades

Because access to this course will no longer be available to the user after a 1-year subscription period has lapsed, it is important that you print your final grade report for your homeschool records. Legally, your homeschool is the legitimate educational institution. As such, this self-paced course assists your school with grades automatically generated by the course portal.

You can use the itemized grades of individual assignments and the overall grade assigned to your student to prepare any transcript required for submission to your requesting institution.

Course Overview

This Precision & Significant Figures course is intended to help high school students become comfortable with the rules necessary for rounding numbers when precision and significant figures are required. Students who have been previously exposed to some rules through a science course such as chemistry and physics may find this self-paced course to be an excellent review.

Students will be taught the proper method of implementing the rules of significant figures for the type of calculations that students are asked to perform in math and science courses. These rules are briefly covered at the beginning of most physics and chemistry textbook, however, the introduction of these rules in a typical text is often brief. This course puts all of the rules in one, comprehensive location and gives students plenty of exposure and practice so they can be comfortable implementing these rules when required.

Students will be assigned readings and practice problems that cover the rules for precision and significant figures. This process will develop a foundation that will be instrumental in success not only in high school chemistry and physics, but later in college science, math, and engineering courses

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Understand the purpose of significant figures & precision
  2. Review mathematical rules for rounding numbers
  3. Master rules for determining significant figures
  4. Discover factors that can make a number infinitely precise
  5. Learn to round to the correct number of significant figures/level of precision when using the mathematical operations
    • Multiplication/Division
    • Addition/Subtraction
    • Logarithms/Exponential functions
    • Trigonometric functions
  6. Apply all of the rounding rules for significant figures/precision when a problem has multiple functions through utilizing the order of operations

Course Materials

To complete this course a student will need:

  1. A 1-year subscription to this digital course
  2. A notebook or scratch paper
  3. Something to write with
  4. One of the following calculators
    1. Any scientific calculator
    2. Any graphing calculator
    3. A web browser that can access desmos.com/scientific

Student Pacing

This course is a self-paced course, which means students can work through the modules at the pace that is most comfortable for them within a 1-year subscription window. Some students may finish this course in a short period, while others may choose to use the whole 1-year subscription window. Your student can work as quickly or as leisurely as you, the homeschool, designate for them.

This course contains 12 short modules and is designed to be a short science elective course. Completion of this course will generally be faster than a standard science course. A single Module in this course can typically be completed in a single sitting. These modules are short and intended to introduce a single concept to the student at a time through reading and problem sets.

An average student can finish this course at a relaxed pace in about a month, completing 3 modules per week. This course can be taken concurrently with a chemistry/physics course if your student needs review or even as a primer to enrollment in a science course. The short length of this course makes it perfect for summer school!

Grading & Point Allotment

Please remember that Apologia is not the legal educational school - that would be your homeschool. This self-paced course will automatically assign the student a grade. It is the responsibility of you, the homeschool to print the final score report and record the score on the student's transcript prior to the end of your 1-year subscription.

Please note, most states will not count this course as a science course because it is an additional course intended to prepare students for chemistry/physics or help students review significant figures and precision.

Total cost is $39.99 ($37.49+$2.50 host fee).
